Swachh Bharat Quiz Across Karnataka

In 2019, QShala and the Government of Karnataka took the Swachh Bharat Quiz to all 30 districts of the state. Over four months, 35 quizzes reached about 20,000 children, and every one of them talked about cleanliness, waste and the environment.

Why quiz on cleanliness

Cleanliness is a habit before it is a policy. Children who understand why waste disposal matters, and what open defecation does to health and the environment, take that understanding home.

The Swachh Bharat Quiz gave them a lively way into those conversations, and gave schools a shared event around a topic that is easy to overlook.

A quiz that travelled

QShala ran the 2019 series with the Karnataka Rural Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation Department, with support from the Zilla Panchayats and education departments.

The quiz did not wait for students to come to one city. It travelled to them, district by district, so children in every part of Karnataka could take part.

From districts to the Grand Finale

• District rounds: the quiz visited all 30 districts of the state.
• Divisional rounds: the winning team from each district moved on to divisional rounds in Belagavi, Kalaburagi, Mysuru and Bengaluru.
• Grand Finale: two teams from each division reached the Grand Finale in Bengaluru on 31 October 2019.

What the children took away

Beyond the trophies, the quiz started conversations in classrooms about the environment, waste and sanitation. Teachers, officials and students were in the same room, working out answers to the same questions.
